Coordinated care for complex smiles.

When jaw position affects the bite, Dr. Tostado can work with an oral and maxillofacial surgeon to plan your care.

Surgical orthodontics combines orthodontic treatment with corrective jaw surgery. It may be considered when a significant jaw relationship cannot be adequately addressed by moving teeth alone.

Dr. Tostado was an orthognathic surgery patient himself and has a particular interest in these cases. He understands that a detailed explanation and coordinated team are essential.

When might surgery be discussed?

An evaluation may identify a lower jaw that sits too far back or forward, a substantial open bite, or other jaw-related concerns. These patterns do not automatically mean surgery is needed.

Dr. Tostado will explain suitable options and, when appropriate, recommend consultation with an oral and maxillofacial surgeon.

How the team works together.

The orthodontist and surgeon develop a coordinated plan. Braces or aligners may be used before and after surgery to align the teeth with the planned jaw position.

The surgeon explains the procedure, hospital arrangements, recovery, and surgical risks. Your recovery and orthodontic schedule are specific to your case.

Understanding risks and costs.

Surgery has risks, including infection, nerve effects, changes in jaw position, and the possible need for further treatment. Discuss the benefits, alternatives, and risks with the treating surgeon.

Orthodontic and surgical fees may be separate. Ask each office for an estimate, and check the specific coverage and authorization requirements of your insurance plan.
